The progenitor - the beginning
Johann Heinrich Lutz was born on January 3, 1812 in Rheineck, Switzerland.
He is the progenitor of most South African Lutzes and was a Swiss individual who arrived in South Africa from Rheineck in 1841 as a missionary.
In Switzerland, he was known as “Johann Heinrich Lutz von Thal”. It is customary in Switzerland to append the name of the village of origin to a family name. Thus, “Thal” represents their ancestral village even though his grandfather, Tobias Lutz, had moved from Thal to the neighboring village of Rheineck in 1750.
